The 9.9 School of Convergence introduces a unique 8-week summer programme for foreign students that combines an international media internship with an in-depth course on international media and globalization.

Programme Description
This unique programme allows students to understand India within the currents and trends that are developing around the world today—not only in academic terms, but in context of actual professional experience. Internships are offered in print, broadcast, and new media, as well as development communication, marketing, advertising, and public relations. Interns will work four and a half days a week in an organisation, with Friday afternoons reserved for classes, led by media industry leaders and academics.
Internship
Students are placed as unpaid interns in some of India’s top media and entertainment companies and NGOs located in Delhi—India’s most cosmopolitan and diverse city. Interns work with and learn from experienced Indian professionals, while mentors provide professional feedback and insight throughout the course.

Course
The purpose of the course is to introduce Indian culture and the Indian media industry within the context of globalization. The course will begin with a week-long intensive introduction to the historical and theoretical concerns surrounding the Indian and global media industry, and their impact on culture and society. Small trips around Delhi will provide an ethnography of the city and its mediated landscapes. Subsequently, classes will meet once a week during the period of the internship, and will be taught by experts in global media and cross-cultural communication, together with leading Indian media professionals. These afternoon classes will add to the professional experience by situating individual experiences in the larger framework of globalization and issues of international media.

• Introduction to transnational media industries
• History of Indian media and their future developments
• Communication media for social and economic development
• Outsourcing of cultural and information industries to India
• Bollywood and beyond–global flows of images from and into India
• Globalization and cultural identity
• Weekly colloquiums given by top media professionals in India
Accommodations
Room and Board (optional) are provided by 9.9 SoC in guest house accommodations in Delhi. Breakfast and dinner are provided. Transportation from the guest house to and from the work place, and to the location of the class is provided.
Excursions in India
Along with class trips in and around Delhi, part of the orientation will take place in Rishekesh, known as the gateway to the Himilayas. Rishekesh, a holy city for Hindus, and an important center of pilgrimage, provides a serene and evocative environment for learning.
Weekends are meant for students to explore Delhi and Northern India. An important tourist hub, most of India’s significant and awe-inspiring tourist destinations—the Taj Mahal, the Golden Temple of Amritsar, rafting expeditions in the Himalayas, a visit to the holy city of Varanasi—are all within reach.
To supplement the learning experience during the eight week course, 9.9 SoC provides an optional 2-week learning tour at the end of the 8-week programme. The tour provides an additional look at of the complexity and diversity within India, taking participants to some important tourist sites in southern and western India, and includes visits to various media industries throughout India.
Requirements for participation
The programme is open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in all majors, as well as recent graduates and graduate students. Students with a previous internship are given priority.
Students must be either native English speakers, or have a satisfactory TOEFL score.
An overall GPA of 2.75 or more.
Students must also submit an application, which includes:
1. One long and two short essays
2. Two recommendations: One from a professor/One from previous professional experience
A brief telephone interview will be conducted if the student meets all requirements.
