Meet some of our students of Journalism class of 2010-2011

Ira Swasti

- Bachelor of Arts (Economics), 2010, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University

Ira thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“I wasn’t looking for the usual media courses at Jamia or IIMC or ACJ. Plus, this course didn’t specialise in just one medium and I wanted to explore which medium I’m best suited to. Finally, it had a creative writing course which none of the other journalism schools provide.”

What she has got from the programme ...

“I’ve met some very interesting people, improved my writing skills because I got a lot of practice and the opportunity to explore the field of journalism. Most of all, this year has been the best year of my life since school.”

Ira is an intern at...

“NDTV Convergence. I have to track news wires, edit stories that I think are important, give them headlines and visuals and publish them.”

Manjiri Indurkar

- Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical), 2009, Rajiv Gandhi Technical University
- Received a scholarship from 9.9 SoC for topping the entrance exam

Manjiri thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because...

“When I chanced upon the SoC website by mistake, I found it pretty interesting. More research told me that they have a fabulous staff and unlike other colleges also offered a course in creative writing, something I have been looking for, for ages.”

What she has got from the programme …

“I took admission in the programme with a lot of expectations and honestly it has exceeded my expectations! Apart from the fact that I made some great friends and met with some amazing teachers, this course has also opened new doors for me. I came here thinking that I can do just one thing well, i.e., talk, but now I think I can write well too. My interests and knowledge has increased in all fields and it’s all thanks to the course which is almost like a grooming course. The outdoor shoots, the film festivals, the trips… each has help me grow as a person.”

Manjiri is an intern at…

“Hindustan Times. Prior to that I was at NewsX — the Assignment Desk. I was tracking wires and watching TV on mute. But I used to listen to everyone around me and chip in with inputs which were often rejected. But I am learning things that I wouldn’t have learnt any other place.”

Ambika Sharma

- Bachelor of Commerce, 2008, Hindu College, Delhi University

Ambika thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“A friend who was an alumnus had once said that the faculty was very good. Also, when I checked the structure of the course and the list faculty members of SoC listed on the website, I knew I’d have a great learning experience here.”

What she has got from the programme …

“The most important thing I learnt was the way all three media — broadcast, online and print — work. The programme helped me improve my writing skills. I got clarity about what I’m interested in (TV), and I know the basics of all three media.”

Ambika is an intern at…

“Network 1. Since it’s a news agency for TV channels, I’m work on scripting, reporting and conducting interviews. Basically, I’m getting a real feel of the journalism industry, and I’m loving it!”

Ratieka Dhawan

- Bachelor of Science in Hospitality & Hotel Management, 2010, Delhi Institute of Hotel Management
- Certified Taj Business Excellence Facilitator

Ratieka thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“With work experience in a different field, I needed a course that gave me overall knowledge in media and journalism. The SoC curriculum seemed tailor-made for my needs. Also the mix of Indian and expat faculty sets it apart from the courses
other colleges offer.

”What she has got from the programme …

“The attention to detail while writing, shooting and editing the videos to make a package, are just some of the things this course has taught me. The holistic learning experience during the Pondicherry trip was absolutely memorable.”

Ratieka is an intern at…

“Good Housekeeping. I get the opportunity to attend various product launches and review books for the magazine. Now, I am also familiar with magazine editing software. The internship is constantly improving my ability to edit and proofread articles.”

Radhika Haswani

- Bachelor of Arts (Elective English, Mass Communication, Human Rights/ Gender/Environment and Economics), 2010, Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi
- Certificate Course in News Reading and Anchoring, Janki Devi Memorial College, Delhi University, in association with R.K. Films and Media Academy

Radhika thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“It offered me a course of my choice, where all fields of media could be explored.
Most other colleges have courses which are restricted to just one field. The faculty is great as is the lush green campus. Also, the structure of the course offers you six months of practical training, which is really so important.”

What she has got from the programme …

“I have been able to explore the three media — print, broadcast, web — and have decided which one is the best option for me. I have gained a lot of knowledge with regard to reporting, structure, news analysis, blogs, editing, of which I had only superficial knowledge previously. The most helpful have been the interesting exercises in class which have always left me knowing more about a subject. But the best thing is that I now know what I want to do.”

Radhika is an intern at…

“Hindustan Times. To start with, we have been given a lot of research and stories to do; there’s also a lot of field work involved. Basically, our job is to report and submit stories for the web edition, and if they are good enough they make it to the print edition too.”

Nikhil Bhushan

- Bachelor of Commerce, 2010, Modern College, Pune
- Diploma in National Security and International Relations, 2009, Fergusson College, Pune
- Diploma in Event Management, 2008, National Institute of Event Management

Nikhil thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“Of the structure of the programme. While the six-month internship was the highlight of the course, the Ranikhet orientation and Pondicherry trip were the
icing on the cake. Also the fact that all media forms (online, print, broadcast) are taught here serves as a big incentive for students.”

What he has got from the programme …

“It has taught me the different dimensions of journalism and because Delhi is the base, networking through the course is easier and I got a wonderful opportunity to work for NewsX. My writing skills have also improved, and the broadcasting course has given me a very firm foundation.”

Nikhil is an intern at…

“NewsX — the Sports Desk. I’m also helping the entertainment desk; making packages, writing scripts, ticker updates and helping journalists make their reports more concrete.”

Navni Kumar

- Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) English, 2010, Gargi College, Delhi University

Navni thought the programme at the SoC was a good idea because…

“The structure really appealed to me — it sounded like the perfect balance of practical and theoretical application, and I didn’t want to wait another two years for something when I could get it in 11 months. Moreover, a friend who was a SoC alumnus gave the faculty a brilliant review!”

What she has got from the programme …

“Is a better understanding of journalism in India! It’s improved my writing skills and has given me an insight into the print, broadcast and online media. I have also gained experience in the technical aspects of the media. The programme has increased my general knowledge and my understanding of current affairs.”

Navni is an intern at…

“Marie Claire. I work in the Features Department under the supervision of the Associate Editor. However, I am given assignments by everyone in the Features department as well as the Fashion department. Some of my work includes researching, writing small pieces, doing book services, compilations and general coordination.

Ananya Chakraborty

- Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) English, 2010, Asansol Girls’ College, Burdwan University

works. I have learnt to write script for news, camera work and editing (FCP).”

Ananya is an intern at…

“NewsX — the Output Department.  I am doing VOs, headlines and packages. I am also working with the entertainment department.  I’ve also learnt to work with Incite.”

Nehal Gupta

- Bachelor of Mass Media (specialising in Journalism), 2010, Jai Hind College, Mumbai University

Nehal thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“The programme didn’t dwell on just one form of media, but all the three major forms. The diversified course SoC provides and the six-month internship period made me chose SoC over other institutes and programmes.”

What she has got from the programme …

“A basic understanding of the various aspects of all three media and how they function. I got to improve my writing and cognitive skills as well. I also got to know some very successful media professionals who are our professors and who also play the role of mentors at various stages.”

Nehal is an intern at…

“Star News — the Lifestyle Desk. I’ve always been interested in the areas of entertainment and lifestyle and working with the lifestyle editorial team has given me a thorough understanding of what goes into preparing even a 30-minute show. I gather the basic details that are required to pull the show together, such as getting the exact visuals and having them modified if required. I’ve also been involved in scripting the show.  I’m involved in every aspect of the work — right from conceptualisation to producing the show; I also get to shoot various scenes on occasion.”

Priam Damodaran

- Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) Political Science, 2009, Gargi College, Delhi University Diploma in Digital Still Photography and Digital Image Processing, 2010, Fergusson College, Pune

Priam thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“It was one of the only colleges where admissions were still open when I was looking for a post-graduate course! I came across a few reviews which recommended the course although those were before 9.9 took over. Then I found
out that ours was the first batch of the post-graduate diploma that started last year. I got a brochurez the faculty mentioned in it was impressive.”

What he has got from the programme …

“The most helpful aspect of the programme for me has been the creative writing course as I feel I have improved on my writing skills and style. It has also exposed me to what I should expect in the world of journalism.”

Priam is an intern at…

“A production company that makes corporate films and does work for the Discovery Networks. I help with research on the material required to prepare the show and assist with editing and writing.”

Abhay Sachdeva

- Bachelor of Business Administration (Marketing, Advertisement and Sales), 2010, Punjab College of Technical Education, Ludhiana

What he has got from the programme …

“The lectures, industry interactions, workshops, assignments and projects have helped me gain an in-depth knowledge about the media. The course has given me ample practice and made me quick and proficient in my work. I got a shot at documentary making when we were taken to Pondicherry. The institute and the atmosphere encourage us to push ourselves harder.”

Abhay is an intern at…

“Network 1. During my internship, I worked as an editor and a scriptwriter for the sports desk. I am learning more about how to write a sports news story, feature sports story and editing on Adobe CS4. I am also learning how to follow up on news from stringers. I think now I am good at byte (interview) transcription too. I also try my hand with headlines, preparing news items and co-ordinating with clients. To see the workings of a news agency first-hand has been a very interesting experience for me, and that is thanks to all my professors and my mentor Richa Pant of the SoC.”

Debojit Datta

- Bachelors of Commerce, 2009, Gauhati University
- Certificate in Multimedia with merit from Arena Multimedia

Debojit thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“Unlike other J-schools, which ask you to choose from a pre-determined selection of streams, this place allowed me to peep into the different aspects of this field and choose the one that best suits me.”

What he has got from the programme …

“A taste of broadcast, online and print journalism, The institute has a small yet interesting blend of students with varied interests and skills. We were more like a box of crayons putogether — different colours, skills and thoughts — with the common motive of painting the same picture. It was a great experience and I got to learn a lot from my mates.”

Debojit is an intern at…

“www.cricketnext.com I write features for their website.”

Aaron Lygdoh

- Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) English, currently studying, Delhi University
- Foundation Programme, National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi

Aaron thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

“I was instantly attracted to the programme structure — it’s a perfect blend of exactly the right dose of theory and hands-on experience. I must admit that joining 9.9 SoC was one of the biggest decisions I’ve made and for once, the most productive.”

What he has got from the programme …

“Though I have always had an inclination towards the media industry, it wasn’t until I joined the SoC that I was able to streamline my thoughts.”

Aaron is an intern at…

“Harper’s Bazaar. I’m alternating between feature writing (i.e., assisting senior writers) and styling (for the fashion team). I have absorbed a lot from the SoC and that has given me an all-new perspective and a totally fresh definition of what the media is all about. Above all, I’m extremely fortunate to have learnt the art of ‘weaving a good story’!”

limited word count, how to be a good journalist. The trip to Pondicherry was also a great learning experience.”

Manisha is an intern at…

“Star News. I make international news segments which I actually learnt to do well after my boss gave me a dressing-down; now I make segments and no mistakes!”

Inder Bisht

- Economics Graduate from Delhi

Inder thought studying at the SoC was a good idea because…

What he has got from the programme …

“I have learnt how to structure my writing, though I am still learning. Ben Arnoldy's classes also taught us the principles of structure, albeit in a different way. The blog writing assignment he gave us was very popular among us students. Equally impressive were his deep and constant analyses of our blogs; I learnt a lot from that. In the editing classes, apart from editing, we learnt several social skills and ways to express ourselves. It was fun!”

Inder is an intern at…

NewsX Input Department (National Bureau). My assignment is to assist several field reporters gathered at Vijay Chowk (outside Parliament House). I have also worked with the output department (Production), where I learnt how to work on software called INCITE and cut packages for the programmes. It’s been a great learning experience.”
