“I wasn’t looking for the usual media courses at Jamia or IIMC or ACJ. Plus, this course didn’t specialise in just one medium and I wanted to explore which medium I’m best suited to. Finally, it had a creative writing course which none of the other journalism schools provide.”

What she has got from the programme …“I took admission in the programme with a lot of expectations and honestly it has exceeded my expectations! Apart from the fact that I made some great friends and met with some amazing teachers, this course has also opened new doors for me. I came here thinking that I can do just one thing well, i.e., talk, but now I think I can write well too. My interests and knowledge has increased in all fields and it’s all thanks to the course which is almost like a grooming course. Most other colleges have courses which are restricted to just one field. The faculty is great as is the lush green campus. Also, the structure of the course offers you six months of practical training, which is really so important.”What she has got from the programme …“I have been able to explore the three media — print, broadcast, web — and have decided which one is the best option for me. I have gained a lot of knowledge with regard to reporting, structure, news analysis, blogs, editing, of which I had only superficial knowledge previously. The most helpful have been the interesting exercises in class which have always left me knowing more about a subject. To start with, we have been given a lot of research and stories to do; there’s also a lot of field work involved. I’ve always been interested in the areas of entertainment and lifestyle and working with the lifestyle editorial team has given me a thorough understanding of what goes into preparing even a 30-minute show. I gather the basic details that are required to pull the show together, such as getting the exact visuals and having them modified if required. I’ve also been involved in scripting the show. I’m involved in every aspect of the work — right from conceptualisation to producing the show; I also get to shoot various scenes on occasion.” |

Abhay is an intern at…“Network 1. During my internship, I worked as an editor and a scriptwriter for the sports desk. I am learning more about how to write a sports news story, feature sports story and editing on Adobe CS4. I am also learning how to follow up on news from stringers. I think now I am good at byte (interview) transcription too. I also try my hand with headlines, preparing news items and co-ordinating with clients. To see the workings of a news agency first-hand has been a very interesting experience for me, and that is thanks to all my professors and my mentor Richa Pant of the SoC.” |

Ben Arnoldy's classes also taught us the principles of structure, albeit in a different way. The blog writing assignment he gave us was very popular among us students. Equally impressive were his deep and constant analyses of our blogs; I learnt a lot from that. In the editing classes, apart from editing, we learnt several social skills and ways to express ourselves. It was fun!”Inder is an intern at…NewsX Input Department (National Bureau).
