CAREER SERVICES
There’s more to Career Services at SoC than simply finding a full-time job at the end of the course. We work with our students right from the beginning to help them understand their strengths and weaknesses; the demands of a particular medium; lifestyle choices forced by certain media jobs, etc. so that they can make the most suitable choice when the time comes. Beyond helping students find media related internships, we provide mentors who advise students on their preferred career options and assist students in finding a job once they finish the Diploma. We also help in crafting resumes and cover letters, and in developing job search and interview strategies. Our Career Services Office is headed by Gunjan Aggarwal, who has earlier handled business development for the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. Gunjan is well-acquainted with the process of opening up new employers for participation in the placement program, and has been credited with placing 200 MBA students from the batch of 2006 at ISB. 9.9 SoC offers students a unique four months industry-integrated internship during the school year. Richa Pant and Gunjan Aggarwal discuss their approaches to getting our students internships in the top media outlets in Delhi, and supporting them throughout the process: What is our overall philosophy for getting students internships?Richa Pant :The internships are an opportunity for my students to practice their newly acquired skills of writing, producing, shooting, editing or reporting in the real world and scale up their learning to a new level. We encourage our students to use the internship period to experiment with different media -- print or broadcasting -- to find the prefect niche for their talents. We try and ensure that the strengths of our students match the needs of the host organisation so that both sides can use the six-month long period to get the best out of each other. The half year spent at a channel,a newspaper or a magazine benefits not just our students but the host organisation as well, as they get a fair sense of our students abilities and it often results in the students getting absorbed in the media outlet. How does the internship process work?Gunjan Aggarwal :In our experience, within three to four months into the programme, students start developing a clearer view on where they would like to pursue an internship. During this time, we also have students interact with alums and other professionals to help them make more informed choices. By the time students are ready for internships, they have a clear set of preferences--in terms of media company or publication, and specific beat. Some students can be very specific and tell us, for example, that they want to intern for a fashion magazine or work on a news desk at a specific channel. Others keep it more broad and suggest only that they would like to work in broadcast news or online reporting. We then approach companies based on the student preference list we develop. What is your role as a student mentor for internships?Richa Pant :I counsel my students before they begin internships. I review the work done by each students in the preceding months to identify their strengths and see where their passions lie. I also liaise with host organisations to understand their needs and try and match students to fit those positions. I help students understand workplace culture and assist them in dealing with any issues at work. I meet their supervisors at work periodically to review their growth and see what can be done to accelerate their learning curve. I keep in touch with print and broadcasting organisations and keep my students abreast of new openings and traineeships on offer in the industryHow does the Full time hiring process work?Gunjan Aggarwal :It is our endeavour to hold as many employer interactions as possible during the course to make sure that our students get information on the companies they wish to work with. Students have an opportunity to convert their internships to full time jobs. In addition, at the end of the year, we will invite relevant companies for on-campus interview sessions with our students. We are also in touch with our alumni on a regular basis to ensure access to information on current openings in their places of work.
